"Why Social Justice Educator+Scholar+Activists are Needed in Leadership Roles, and How to Lead Anti-Oppressively in schools of education"

SUMMARY: What does it mean to lead for social justice, particularly in schools and colleges of education? This 4-day workshop is geared for new leaders and leaders-in-the-making in schools and colleges of education who are starting or seeking institutional positions (dean, associate dean, chair, director), positions in professional associations (president, board member), or informal roles (mentor, organizer), and especially encourages participation by faculty and staff in higher education who are already immersed in social justice work and/or who are members of underrepresented groups. As educator-scholar-activists, we will explore the impact that is possible when viewing leadership as integral to movement building. Participants will learn conceptual frameworks and concrete strategies from accomplished leader Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, who has served as school of education dean, department chair, research center director, grant primary investigator, national association president, community organization board president, and founder of several networks. Lodging options are available, as is an option to commute.
REGISTRATION: Registration includes access to all sessions (please see the tentative schedule below). Registration also includes 1 dinner, 3 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and snacks, as well as a copy of one of Dr. Kumashiro’s books. Individuals with limited financial resources are welcome to select the “discounted registration rate,” which entails the same workshop experience but for a lower fee.
LODGING: Various lodging options are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All lodging includes high quality bedding, towels, iron, hairdryer, and essentials, as well as central AC/heat. All bedrooms require the use of stairs. Check in begins on Thursday at 3:30pm, and check out is on Sunday at 10:30am (no early check in or late check out is possible).
VENUE: To make this workshop affordable and memorable, we are staying in an expansive, unique, and charming house that has much more of a communal feel and much less of the amenities and luxuries than in a high-end corporate hotel. When not in a session, participants have many spaces to write and to meet, including indoor and outdoor seating areas, with wifi throughout the property. At all times, we will need to be careful not to damage the property or to disturb the neighbors.
LOCATION AND PARKING: The venue is in a diverse urban neighborhood in the northwest side of Chicago, and is a 20-minute drive from O'Hare Airport and a 20-min drive into downtown Chicago. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the venue. If you drive, ample street parking is available; for those without a car, cabs and shared rides like Lyft are easily available, and bus stops and commuter rail stations are a few blocks from the venue.
WHAT TO BRING: The workshop will be as “green” as possible, so no handouts should be expected. Participants should bring a laptop or writing supplies to take notes during the sessions as well as to work on their own between sessions, as well as anything to make the experience more enjoyable and comfortable (preferred snacks, headphones, etc). Valuables should be left at home, and the organizers and property owners are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property.
PAYMENTS: All payments must be submitted at the time of registration, and are non-refundable. Participants may arrive late or leave early, which does not change the registration or lodging fees
