Gathering of Asian American Educators & Scholars
Monday, May 24, 2021
9:00-10:00am Hawai'i | 12:00-1:00pm Pacific | 3:00-4:00pm Eastern
The escalated and ongoing attacks on and injustice towards Asian Americans have affected many of us profoundly. Among educators, solidarity actions are growing: in just the past few weeks, nearly 2000 educators of all racial backgrounds have signed the Pledge to Support AAPIs and Advance Justice.
Educators who identify as Asian American face unique challenges. Therefore, we are pleased to announce this online gathering specifically for educational practitioners, scholars, leaders, and activists who identify as Asian American (i.e., Asian Americans who work in the field of education).
** This gathering is intended for Asian Americans, and we ask our allies to respect this closed space. **
This gathering will begin with brief opening comments by organizers of the Pledge (starting with Kevin Kumashiro and Ruchi Agarwal-Rangnath), and then allow for an informal conversation among participants, framed by such questions as: How are you doing right now, and how do you wish to be? What is happening regarding Asian Americans in education, and what should be happening differently? What is our role as Asian American educators, and how might lessons from anti-oppressive movement building help us to trouble and embolden our intervention? To help to create a safe space, this event will not be recorded.
This event is free but registration is required and space is limited.
If you haven't already, you can view and sign the Pledge here.
