SUMMARY: This 5-day “Writing Workshop & Retreat” is geared for educators, scholars, and advocates who seek to broaden and strengthen their toolkit for publishing on education and social justice in both academic and public venues. Participants will learn writing strategies from award-winning scholar Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, as well as his tips for writing for the media and publishing journal articles and books. Participants will have the option to receive individual mentoring on their writing goals, as well as to join a small-group discussion on short drafts of their writing. When not in sessions, participants will have ample time to sit in picturesque settings to write.

WORKSHOP VENUE: The Workshop & Retreat will be held at the Windward Retreat Center in the town of Ka‘a‘awa on the island of O‘ahu. Participants are responsible for their own transportation.

LODGING OPTIONS: Workshop participants can choose to commute or to stay in one of several lodging options, including single/double occupancy rooms at the retreat center or in overflow housing nearby. The Workshop organizer will assign roommates if you select the “double” rate without identifying a roommate (in the “Additional Information” box in the Registration process, you can indicate the name of your preferred roommate).

REGISTRATION OPTIONS: Registration includes access to all Workshop sessions, including one optional individual mentoring session and one optional small-group session. Registration also includes three meals daily (vegan options available). Seven registration rates are available, depending on your lodging preference.

SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of $100 scholarships is available, and anyone with limited financial resources may apply. If your application is approved, you will receive a code to access the online registration form with the adjusted rate (namely, $100 less than the published rate for your preferred type of registration and lodging). The code will be effective for one week, so you will need to register right away; once the code expires you can reapply to be added to the waitlist for scholarships. To apply, please contact @ with the following information:

  • your name, job title, institutional affiliation, and email address
  • a statement confirming that “I am interested in registering for the Writing Workshop & Retreat in July 2018 and would like to request a $100 scholarship for individuals with limited financial resources” (you do not need to explain your circumstances)
  • your preferred type of registration and lodging option

WHAT TO BRING: The Workshop will be as “green” as possible, so no handouts should be expected. Participants should bring a laptop or writing supplies to take notes during the sessions as well as to work on their own writing when not in sessions.

PAYMENTS: All registration payments must be submitted via the Form below at the time of registration, and are non-refundable. Participants may arrive late or leave early, which does not change the registration fees.

LEGAL AGREEMENTS: By registering, you are agreeing to hold Kevin Kumashiro Consulting harmless regarding liability, and also to affirm the indemnity of Kevin Kumashiro Consulting regarding intellectual property.
