SUMMARY: This 6-day “Writing Workshop & Retreat” is geared for educators, scholars, and advocates who seek to broaden and strengthen their toolkit for publishing on education and social justice in both academic and public venues. Participants will learn writing strategies from award-winning scholar Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, as well as his tips for writing for the media and publishing journal articles and books. Participants will have the option to receive individual mentoring on their writing goals, as well as to join a small-group discussion on short drafts of their writing. When not in sessions, participants will have ample time to sit in picturesque settings to write.

VENUE: To make this workshop intimate and affordable, we are staying in an expansive, unique, and charming house that has more of a communal feel and less of the amenities and luxuries than in a high-end corporate hotel. Wifi is available; some stairs are required. When not in a session, participants have many spaces to write and to meet, including indoor and outdoor seating areas. At all times, we will need to be careful not to damage the property or to disturb the neighbors.

LOCATION AND PARKING: The venue is in a diverse urban neighborhood in Oakland, and is a one-mile walk to Lake Merritt, an eight-mile drive from the Oakland airport, a 10-min drive to Berkeley, and a 20-min drive to downtown San Francisco. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the venue. If you drive, ample street parking is available; for those without a car, cabs and shared rides like Uber/Lyft are easily available, and bus stops are a few blocks from the venue.

WHAT TO BRING: The Workshop will be as “green” as possible, so no handouts should be expected. Participants should bring a laptop or writing supplies to take notes during the sessions as well as to work on their own writing when not in sessions. Valuables should be left at home, and the organizers and property owners are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property.

LODGING: Various lodging options are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All lodging includes high quality bedding, towels, and basic essentials. Check in begins on Friday at 4:30pm, and check out is on Wednesday at 10:30am (no early check in or late check out is possible). The Workshop organizer will assign roommates if you select the “double” or “triple” rate without identifying a roommate (in the “Additional Information” box in the Registration process, you can indicate the name of your preferred roommate).

REGISTRATION OPTIONS: Registration includes access to all sessions, including one optional individual mentoring session and one optional small-group session. Registration also includes dinner on the first night, lunches on days 2-5, and light breakfast every morning (dietary restrictions can be requested on the Registration Form). Below are four options to register, together with options for lodging, followed by information on group discounts and scholarships:

$650     Registration without lodging

$900     Registration plus lodging in a Shared Triple Room with shared bathrooms (you will be assigned to a room with two others, or you may specify roommates when you register)

$1150    Registration plus lodging in a Shared Double Room with shared bathrooms (you will be assigned to a room with one other, or you may specify a roommate when you register)

$1400    Registration plus lodging in a Single Room with shared bathrooms

(Please scroll down to access the Registration Form.)

SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of $100 scholarships is available to anyone with limited financial resources. To request a scholarship, please contact kevin@kevinkumashiro.com with your name, job title, institutional affiliation, email address, and preferred lodging. You will receive a code to access the online registration form with the discounted rate.

PAYMENTS: All registration payments must be submitted via the Form below at the time of registration, and are non-refundable. Participants may arrive late or leave early, which does not change the registration fees.

LEGAL AGREEMENTS: By registering, you are agreeing to hold Kevin Kumashiro Consulting harmless regarding liability, and also to affirm the indemnity of Kevin Kumashiro Consulting regarding intellectual property.
